Sally Yates is the former acting Attorney General, an appointee of President Obama who led the Department of Justice during the brief period between the moment Obama’s Attorney General Loretta Lynch stepped down upon President Trump assuming office, and incoming Trump Attorney General Jeff Sessions was confirmed by the Senate and sworn in.
Yates took to Twitter Sunday evening to respond to President Trump’s petty, petulant, prepubescent attack on the FBI earlier in the day. Trump is reeling from Friday’s bombshell news that his former National Security Advisor, Michael Flynn, has accepted a plea bargain with special counsel Robert Mueller’s office.
Flynn has agreed to be a cooperating witness in Mueller’s investigation into Russia’s counterintelligence operation to undermine the 2016 presidential election to Donald Trump’s benefit, and the president has not handled that news well.
After news broke that Mueller fired an FBI agent for sending anti-Trump text messages, the president pounced, highlighting the incident as if it alone discredited the entire enterprise. Sally Yates, however, is having none of it. She couldn’t stay on the sidelines while the president attacked her former colleagues, and she hit back with a vengeance:
The FBI is in “tatters”? No. The only thing in tatters is the President’s respect for the rule of law. The dedicated men and women of the FBI deserve better.

Yates was unceremoniously fired by President Trump before Sessions took office because she refused to implement the unconstitutional executive order calling for a Muslim travel ban. Subsequent court orders blocking the executive order have proved her right.
Yates was also the first Justice Department official to inform President Trump that Michael Flynn had made undisclosed contacts with Russian officials, news that the White House blatantly ignored for 18 days before Trump finally sacked him when news reports exposed Flynn’s Russian failings.
One day in the not too distant future, we’ll all look back on this era in American history and have a laugh over how horribly bankrupt the office of the president of the United States became. Until then, however, we’re going to have to just take tough-love comments from people like Sally Yates on the chin to remind us how horribly off-the-rails things currently are.
Now that Flynn has flipped, Sally Yates has been proven right yet again.
Yates 2, Trump 0.
